What is Metabolic Syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions—increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess abdominal fat, and abnormal cholesterol levels—that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
Diagnostic Criteria:
You are generally diagnosed with metabolic syndrome if you have three or more of the following:
Waist Circumference
- Men: Greater than 40 inches (102 cm)
- Women: Greater than 35 inches (88 cm)
Blood Pressure
- 130/85 mmHg or higher or taking medication for high blood pressure
Triglycerides
- 150 mg/dL or higher or taking medication for high triglycerides
HDL Cholesterol
- Men: Less than 40 mg/dL
- Women: Less than 50 mg/dL
Fasting Blood Sugar
- 100 mg/dL or higher or taking medication for high blood sugar
